Tips For Choosing a Broadband Provider
The broadband industry is seeing huge growth in the UK despite the recession affecting other areas. With new technologies like mobile broadband allowing more people than ever to connect to the internet at high speeds the broadband market has never been a better place for the consumer to get a great deal. Before you make your choice and commit to a provider or broadband type you will need to consider several key options and necessities.
Firstly you will need to consider the type of broadband that you want. There are three main options; ADSL, Cable and Mobile Broadband. ADSL and Cable broadband are both fixed line services, with the former using landline telephone connections and the latter utilising underground fibre optic cable networks to provide the service. Mobile broadband is completely wireless, using 3G mobile networks rather than fixed lines and as such can be access from anywhere in the UK with adequate reception. ADSL is the most widely available, with most properties with a telephone line eligible. Cable broadband is available in over 50% of UK homes and mobile broadband coverage varies depending on the provider you choose.
Your choice of service will also be affected by the speed which you want. Most ADSL providers offer up to 8Mbps connections for average customers. Some providers, like BT, Bulldog and BE broadband now offer 20Mbps or more in certain areas, though speeds vary and consumer reports show that real life speeds rarely reach the advertised maximum. Cable broadband, though more limited in coverage, can offer speeds of up to 50Mbps. These faster connections are more expensive but offer unrivalled opportunities for downloading, streaming and online gaming. Mobile broadband speeds can be up to 7.2Mbps, but in most cases between 1-3Mbps should be expected.
Another important factor affecting your choice of mobile broadband provider will be the monthly price. ADSL and Cable broadband are usually competitive in like-for-like terms, though you will usually have to pay for line rental costs on top of your monthly price. It is also worth bearing in mind that Virgin Media is the only provider of Cable broadband to consumers, whilst there are many different ADSL providers all competing for your custom. Mobile broadband is provided by all of the main UK mobile phone networks, as well as BT and Virgin Media. Prices vary depending on how much monthly data allowance you need, whilst many ADSL and Cable broadband packages come with unlimited usage for unrestricted internet use all month long.
The final consideration that many will take into account is the minimum contractual commitment that broadband connections entail. Whichever connection type you choose you will usually have to commit for 12-24 months. Lower monthly commitments are available on the fixed line connections, of 1 month or more, but prices will be higher as your continued custom is not assured. To get the best deal you will need to compare broadband packages online. This will save you visiting multiple websites and can save you time and money.
